Simply follow the programme below for as long as you can before you head for the beach. Week one seven- day detox. Not only do many of us over- eat these days but, in addition, the food we eat has often lost much of its nutritional value through processing, and is packed full of fat, sugar and additives. A detox diet allows two things to happen. First, by abstaining from certain foods you stop overloading your body with harmful substances. Second, you give it plenty of nutrients to speed up the elimination of old toxins and promote cell renewal. Raw fruit and vegetables, lentils and pulses and wholegrain rice therefore play a large part in the detox diet. As your body starts to clear itself of trapped toxins, you are likely to feel tired and may suffer from aching muscles, mood swings, headaches and skin problems. In addition, you may like to add one or two of the following liquids for their supplementary detox benefits and to help keep hunger pangs at bay. Have no more than three glasses of juice today. Unsweetened herbal or spice teas (no more than three cups in a day) such as ginger, dandelion, fennel or yarrow act as useful detoxifiers. Fruits are generally very alkaline - so they help neutralise the acidic waste produced by the body when you begin to detox. Their high fructose (fruit sugar) content also provides instant energy. Watermelon has diuretic properties, speeding the passage of fluids carrying toxins through the body. Choose combinations of your favourites - but consider the following for their detox benefits. Watercress contains high levels of beta- carotene and sulphur, both of which are liver tonics. Parsley is a mild diuretic and contains zinc and trace minerals, vital for efficient liver function. Day four: Continue to drink plenty of water, and snack on fruit, but make one meal today a combination of cooked vegetables and boiled brown, short grain rice. The other meal should be a raw vegetable salad. Short grain brown rice is the most absorbent and easily digested type of rice. Rich in fibre, it soaks up toxins from the gut. Steam or stir fry your vegetables using spices and herbs for taste. But beware - they can provoke severe wind. Beetroot is an acidic (as opposed to acid- forming) food, which stimulates the production of enzymes that aid digestion in the stomach. Try to leave four hours between the consumption of the two food types. Have beans and lentils with stir fried or steamed vegetables, or a crisp salad. Nuts and seeds can be eaten with all food types, and should be eaten raw and unsalted. They provide useful calories in the form of essential fatty acids (EFAs), which can help to speed up digestion. If you're bored with brown rice by now, try wholegrains as an alternative. Buckwheat, kasha and a wide selection of other wholegrains are available in the rice or exotic food section of larger supermarkets and health food stores. Avoid wheat - which can trigger poor digestion in some people. Any fresh fish will do, but your skin will benefit from the essential fatty acids found in oily fish such as sardines, tuna and salmon.
