How To Slim Your Hips And Thighs. MORE: 2. 5 Ways People With Highly Stressful Jobs Keep It Together (Prevention Premium)This is one reason why thigh fat is so difficult to get rid of. Genes left over from your cave- dwelling ancestors cause hormones and enzymes in your body to direct every extra calorie into waiting fat cells in your hips and thighs. For example, your levels of the female sex hormone estrogen may be a tad higher than other women whose bodies don't store excess fat in these areas (or as much of it). But there are ways to coax these fat cells in your thighs to release their contents, and to coax your muscle cells into burning it up! So don't despair. Read on for the right moves that blast fat from your hips and thighs. Are you ready to see a slimmer, healthier you? Get the results you're looking for with our Leave Your Fat Behind Workout Plan. What Causes Cellulite? Besides excess fat in their thighs, many women complain to me about a certain type of fat known as cellulite. They tell me that no matter how much weight they lose, they can't seem to smooth out the tiny lumps of fat on their thighs. What Exercises Burn Belly FatIndeed, some of the most slender women have cellulite. Cellulite is created when fat manages to push its way through tiny holes in your connective tissue, the thick web of interwoven fibers just underneath your skin. Strong and healthy connective tissue forms a tighter web of interwoven fibers, preventing fat from pressing its way through. Weak, unhealthy connective tissue, on the other hand, more easily stretches apart, allowing tiny fat pockets to poke through. Many factors can weaken your connective tissue, setting the stage for cellulite. They include: High Hormone Levels: Women with higher- than- normal levels of the female hormone estrogen tend to suffer more often from cellulite. Other than directing extra calories to fat cells in your thighs, estrogen also weakens connective tissue. When estrogen softens connective tissue around the womb, it makes childbirth possible. Unfortunately, estrogen softens all of the connective tissue in your body, not just that around your womb. 9 Quick Ways to Lose Your Thigh Fat. There's no one exercise or food that specifically helps you lose weight in your legs. Burning calories is key to. The Best Inner-Thigh Exercises of All Time. To maximize fat loss and sculpt sexy legs. Poor Blood Circulation: Usually, high estrogen levels alone won't trigger cellulite to form. Many experts believe that you must also have poor blood circulation to your connective tissue, which tends to cause swelling. The swelling stretches the connective tissue apart, allowing the fat to bulge through. Fluid Retention: Many people think that fluid retention takes place only in the abdomen. That's not true. It actually occurs all over your body, including your thighs. If you've ever pulled on a favorite pair of pants and found them tight in the thighs one day and loose the next, you've experienced the ebb and flow of fluid retention. Any type of swelling in your thighs—particularly on a chronic basis—will stretch out and weaken connective tissue. A Frenzied Lifestyle: Emotional stress has also been shown to weaken connective tissue. What You Can Do. First, daily exercise will help to normalize your hormonal levels. This not only helps prevent cellulite, it will also help to prevent mood swings. Second, exercising will increase blood circulation to your thighs, helping to keep the connective tissue healthy. Better blood circulation will, in turn, help to remove excess fluid. Finally, as you shed fat in your hips and thighs, you'll have less of it to press against your connective tissue. Give this HIIT at-home workout a try to condition your lower body and burn fat with nothing but a set of stairs and a. Leg Exercises Burn Fat and Build Bigger Legs. 5 fast bodyweight workouts for weight loss These fat-burning. No leg lift or combination of foods will burn fat specifically in. What Exercises Burn Fat for a 16. Good News/Bad News. Genetically speaking, there are two predominant body types. Some people gain fat in their lower bodies, creating the pear shape mentioned earlier. Others tend to gain fat in their abdomens, creating what's known as an apple shape. Though you may have come to despise the fat on your hips and thighs, you should know that you have a major advantage over people who tend to gain it elsewhere. Research has shown over and over again that abdominal fat—and not hip and thigh fat—is particularly dangerous to your health. Abdominal fat more easily makes its way into your bloodstream, clogging your arteries. Thigh fat is much less likely to do so. Now for the bad news. Thigh fat is a little harder to burn off than belly fat. You probably know this already. If you and a guy friend have ever resolved to lose weight at the same time, you probably noticed that he had a much easier time dropping the weight in his belly than you did in your thighs. MORE: Your 5- Minute Routine For Killer, Ageless Arms. Regardless, that doesn't mean you can't burn it off. I know that women who have excess thigh fat are generally the most motivated to get rid of it. So I probably don't have to give you much of a pep talk to help motivate you toward your goal. Abdominal fat is easy to hide with a big sweater. Thigh fat, on the other hand, is almost impossible to hide. And summer can be a very difficult time for women. My female friends and online clients tell me that they hate wearing shorts and swimsuits because they hate revealing their legs. And they tell me that their pants tend to hug too tightly in the thighs. But you can change all of that! Not only can you slim down your thighs and hips and smooth away that cellulite, but you can also build the muscles in your legs, which are some of the largest and strongest muscles in your body. Stronger leg muscles make your overall life feel so much more effortless. You'll walk with more confidence and with a spring in your step. You'll be able to climb stairs without getting tired. And you'll be able to go on strenuous hikes—all because of your strong legs! You will feel better about yourself from the inside out. This is a guest post by Laura Schoenfeld, a Registered Dietitian with a Master’s degree in Public Health, and staff nutritionist and content manager for Chris. Kresser. com. You can learn more about Laura by checking out her popular blog or visiting her on Facebook. Carbohydrates, and the role they play in a healthy diet, are one of the most hotly contested nutritional debates in the world, both in conventional and ancestral health circles. One one side, you’ve got folks who say that carbohydrates are nonessential and increase your risk for diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and neurological disorders. On the other side, some say that carbohydrates are crucial for good health and should make up the majority of your calories. It’s no wonder I have so many clients who come to me completely confused about carbs and whether or not they should eat more or less of them. While some people do incredibly well following a low carb Paleo diet, there are many people who crash and burn on this type of dietary plan. So, how can you tell if you’re the type of person who shouldn’t be eating a low carb diet, and how do you figure out how many carbs you should be eating? I plan to teach you just that in this article. Is your low- carb diet doing you more harm than good? Find out how many carbs YOU should be eating. Pregnancy. I recently discussed the role of carbohydrates during pregnancy in an episode of The Ancestral RDs Podcast. The most important reason why women need adequate carbohydrates during pregnancy is to ensure adequate fetal brain development and growth. Another reason is because a high protein diet can be dangerous during pregnancy, and when you cut out carbohydrate as a major macronutrient, you usually can’t help but increase protein as a percentage of calories. Protein intake greater than 2. The Institute of Medicine recommends a minimum of 1. Paul Jaminet advises pregnant mothers to restrict protein to about 1. Chris recommends a moderate carb approach for most pregnant women (except those with any type of diabetes) in his book, Your Personal Paleo Code (published in paperback as The Paleo Cure in December 2. Like these other experts, I generally recommend 3. Unless you have diabetes or a serious neurological condition that requires carbohydrate restriction, it’s not worth the risk playing around with a low carb diet when you’re pregnant, and these diets aren’t conducive to fertility for many women either. Each athlete is completely unique in their ability to perform well on a low carb diet, and there’s nothing wrong with testing out the diet to see how it affects your athletic ability.
Best Dog Food For Dachshunds The Ultimate Dachshund Dog Food Buyer’s Guide. A popular breed today, Dachshunds can be playful, saucy, and clever small breed dogs. But if you’ve been trying a low carb diet for months now and your workouts are suffering, your weight isn’t budging (or maybe you’ve even gained weight!), and your recovery time is increasing, you’re probably not the type of person who can handle a low carb diet combined with regular intense physical activity. I’ve had many clients come to me on a low carb diet who, after switching to a more moderate carb approach, found that their energy and endurance significantly increased, and they were able to make quicker strength gains than before. Many also were able to shed some of the stubborn body fat that they’d been retaining despite eating a low carb diet and training hard, which was a result they didn’t expect! For my athletic clients, I usually recommend a minimum of 2. I may actually recommend more like 4. Again, each athlete is an individual and what works for one person, or even a thousand people, may not work for you. So don’t be afraid to experiment and pay attention to how your diet makes you look, feel, and perform! And don’t hesitate to get help if you need it! Hypothyroidism and HPA Axis Dysregulation (Adrenal Fatigue)Hypothyroidism is one of the most commonly cited medical reasons for needing to eat a moderate carb diet. The main reason why carbs affect thyroid function so directly is because insulin is needed for the conversion of the inactive T4 hormone into the active T3 hormone, and insulin is generally quite low on very low carbohydrate diets. So if you’ve suddenly started developing hypothyroid symptoms on your low carb diet, it’s a pretty good sign that you’d be better off upping the carbs (and getting your thyroid tested if you haven’t already!) For more about how low carb dieting affects your thyroid, listen to this great interview with Chris by Jimmy Moore. HPA axis dysregulation, also known as adrenal fatigue, is another condition where a moderate carb intake is important for general health. ISteroids.com is the biggest news and information website about Anabolic Steroids. Over 125,000 members are participating in daily bodybuilding discussion on our forums. Kelsey and I talked about adrenal fatigue on our first Ask the RD podcast, so listen to it if you’re unfamiliar with this condition. The main hormone that gets dysregulated in adrenal fatigue is cortisol, and cortisol has been shown to increase on a low carb diet. This means that a low carb diet is a potential adrenal stressor in susceptible individuals. Combine that with a stressful job, inadequate sleep, and overexercise, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for adrenal burnout. So if you have adrenal fatigue, or if your current lifestyle is already high stress in a few different areas, you may want to increase your carb intake until you can get those additional stressors under control, as you may drive yourself into adrenal fatigue by having a chronically elevated cortisol output. Lara Briden has written a great article on the benefits of whole food carbohydrates in lowering cortisol and raising GABA, a calming hormone that is often low in adrenal fatigue patients. If you’re experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism or adrenal fatigue, you may be worsening them with a well- intentioned low carb Paleo diet. I recommend working with someone to help you figure out if your diet is indeed making these symptoms worse, and how to change what you eat to better support your thyroid and adrenal health. Gut Health. One of the less discussed downsides of a very low carbohydrate diet over the long run is the potential for alteration of the gut flora. Chris recently covered this issue in a podcast with Jeff Leach, where they discussed evidence that a very low carb diet can lead to gut dysbiosis and a reduction in the diversity of the gut flora. A lot of the information on this topic is new and not fully understood, but it’s reasonable to believe that when you avoid carbs, you’re also avoiding important prebiotics (i. Without them, your beneficial flora can’t produce as much gut- healing substances like butyrate and other short chain fatty acids, and your microbiome composition may even shift in an undesirable direction. And as Chris would say, you’re only as healthy as your gut is: an unhealthy gut contributes to everything from obesity and diabetes, to digestive illness, to autoimmune disease, to skin disorders. Those who are doing very low carbohydrate diets, and who simply can’t increase their starch intake for whatever reason, should use prebiotic supplements such as resistant starch- rich unmodified potato starch or FOS powder. However, these products must be incorporated slowly into your supplement regimen, as you can experience severe gas and bloating if too many prebiotics are taken all at once, or if there is existing gut dysbiosis or bacterial overgrowth. In this case, it would be wise to work with someone who can help you get the prebiotics you need while on a very low carbohydrate or ketogenic diet to protect the health of your gut microbiota. How Many Carbs Do I Need? To determine how many carbs my clients need to eat in a day to reach their health goals, first I decide what percentage of calories from carbs they’d possibly do best with. As an example from above, a woman struggling with fertility issues may benefit from a carb intake around 3. I then determine her caloric needs using a calculator like this one. If we determine that her daily needs are roughly 2. As there are 4 calories in a gram of carbohydrate, this works out to be 1. Usually I give my clients a target range to hit depending on their activity levels, and we use these targets to re- evaluate their food diaries and see if they’re hitting their goals. Most of my clients are surprised to learn how much carb- rich Paleo foods they have to eat to get up to 1. But once they start making a real effort to hit those targets, the health benefits are immediate. These benefits include weight loss, elevated mood, skin improvements, increased energy, normal menstrual function, more satisfying sleep, and more. It’s so exciting to see what a couple of starchy tubers and pieces of fruit can do for a person’s health when they simply need to eat more carbs! Wondering what foods have carbs in them, and what portion sizes you need to eat of each type to get the carbs you need? Click here for a handy list you can print out! Final Thoughts. The purpose of this article was not to bash low carb diets. I truly believe that there are many people out there who get amazing health results from a low carb plan, and there are dozens of health conditions that benefit from a very low carb or ketogenic diet, especially severe neurological conditions. Paul Jaminet has written some great posts explaining when a ketogenic diet may be useful and necessary, so I strongly suggest reading those posts if you’re still on the fence about where you stand with carbohydrates and your health needs. My hope is that by reading this article, you’ll be able to understand the many factors that play into how a person handles a low carbohydrate diet, and whether or not their health will improve on such a plan. Everyone is different in their ability to thrive on a low carbohydrate diet. If you’ve found yourself identifying with any of the issues I’ve written about in this post, you may be in need of a macronutrient adjustment in your diet. Helping people optimize their carb intake is a challenge I truly enjoy. Lauren Gambina (gambina. Purely Inspired Garcinia Cambogia+ - 1. CTA. I had NOT planned to snack between meals, but around 1. I wanted to begin with a nutrition recommendation, but correcting your thyroid medication first priority. If your medication is not helping to correct TSH and thyroid hormone levels, as well as relieve symptoms, then weight loss goes from difficult to impossible. Work with your health care provider to determine what type of medication is better for you, and also to find the optimal dose required. While Levothyroxine is on average more effective, Armour is reportedly much better tolerated. There is no difference between taking your thyroid hormone meds in the morning vs evening. Until your thyroid hormone levels are corrected, weight loss is much more difficult. Cut Back on Added Sugars and Refined Starches. I need to begin with this clarification: Carbohydrates are not inherently bad for you. That is, they do not make you fat or sick on their own (I wrote in detail about it here). It always comes back to total calories consumed. That said, carbs in the form of added sugars and highly refined starches are unhealthy and unnecessary. They offer almost zero nutritional benefit (known as “empty calories”) and make up a large portion of the excess calories we consume. In fact, the average American adult’s consumption of added sugar increased by more than 3. This was illustrated below by Obesity. Fortunately those numbers have began to reverse; a trend that needs to continue. Nevertheless, cutting back on added sugar is still the most simple and direct way to cut out excess “empty” calories. This is done by limiting intake of junk foods, flavoured drinks (including juice), alcohol, white bread, most cereals and muesli bars, and a good portion of packaged food in your supermarket’s “health food” aisle. That includes gluten- free junk food. But you need to begin taking actionable steps that help you cut back and form healthier habits. Start by not having junk foods at home, or at least keep them out of sight in a cupboard you never use. Summary: Added sugar makes up a large portion of the excess calories an average person consumes each day. Cutting down on your intake is critical if you want to successfully lose weight. Base Meals Around Vegetables and Protein. If you want to lose weight with an underactive thyroid, these should be the foundation of almost every meal you make, and plated first when serving. There are 2 main reasons for this: 1. Protein is paramount for weight loss. The main benefit of protein is that it’s much more satiating than both fat and carbs. That is, it has a unique ability to reduce appetite and therefore your overall caloric intake too. Studies show high protein diets may also reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 6. If you're NOT working out due to laziness, injury or lack of time but still can't lose weight Start Here for a beginner workout program. First, yes I had my entire thyroid removed. Your questions are good. The surgery is easy. Day surgery and goes well unless the goiter is causing extra problems. Graves' disease, which is caused by a generalized overactivity of the thyroid gland, is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. In this condition, the thyroid gland. Losing weight and keeping it off can be a struggle, but it doesn't have to be. This article outlines how to lose weight with an underactive thyroid. Foods high in protein include meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, legumes (beans) and dairy. Protein is also the muscle- building nutrient, so a high protein diet complements regular exercise. Vegetables provide most vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients. The nutrient- density of meals is even more important for those with hypothyroidism and other autoimmune diseases, where nutrient absorption and deficiency are more common. Emphasis goes to green leafy vegetables, mushrooms and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Veggies are also our greatest source of fibre, a nutrient that feeds the healthy bacteria in our gut. Studies show that long- term low fibre intake will completely throw out the balance of your gut bacteria; the effects on the gut health of mice was irreversible (5). As a general guide, the protein portion of your meal should be the size of your palm, and salad/vegetables the size of your hand. This would leave about 1/4 or less of your plate for carbs (such as rice or potato or pasta). Summary: Protein foods and vegetables should make up the majority of your plate. They are generally the most filling and/or nutrient- dense foods per calorie. Increase your intake of Selenium and Zinc. Selenium and zinc are two nutrients directly involved in thyroid function. It is critical that your diet contains adequate quantities in order to optimise thyroid hormone production and metabolism. Selenium. Selenium is an essential mineral that helps the body to recycle iodine. That’s the reason the thyroid has the highest selenium content (per gram of tissue) of all our organs (6). Therefore, it’s thought that low selenium levels contribute to hypothyroidism through alternate mechanisms related to iodine. For this reason it’s fundamental to eat a diet that contains many selenium- rich foods, such as: Brazil nuts. Tuna and sardines. Beef and chicken. Eggs. Legumes. Zinc. Zincis an essential mineral required to regulate Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). In fact, the metabolism of zinc and thyroid hormones are closely interlinked, which is why a deficiency can lead to alopecia (hair loss) (7). While zinc deficiency is very uncommon in the developed world, it’s still recommended to eat a variety of zinc- rich foods (8). This includes: Oysters and shellfish. Beef and chicken. Legumes, nuts and seeds. Milk and yoghurt. Iodine is also important for thyroid health, but in reality insufficient iodine levels that can harm the thyroid is extremely rare in developed countries (9). You’re much better off focusing on selenium and zinc- rich foods, many of which contain iodine anyways. Summary: Consuming a diet naturally rich in selenium and zinc is critical for maintaining a healthy thyroid and metabolism. Take regular walks or start lifting weights each week“You can’t out- exercise a bad diet.”This is true, especially when your metabolism is slower than normal. That’s why this article places so much emphasis on dietary changes. However, if you want to kick- start your weight loss then regular exercise is the best way to do it. Weight loss ultimately comes down to expending more energy (calories) than you consume. Although it’s much more complex than “eat less, move more” (there are many biological factors to consider), being active helps to burn additional calories. It also improves aspects of health that even perfect nutrition can’t provide, such as strength and mobility. You don’t have to put yourself through miserable high- intensity workouts either. Research shows that low- intensity exercise that lasts longer – such as regular long walks – are just as effective for weight loss, especially if you are just starting out (1. A general guideline is to walk for at least 6. Unable to do cardio exercise. Regularly lifting weights (or bodyweight exercises) is also highly beneficial, especially if mobility is an issue for you. In fact, it’s equally as important as cardio and we should be doing both where possible. Known as resistance exercise, it still helps burns additional calories, but with the added benefit of building lean muscle. The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism and the less likely you are to fall ill (1. There are numerous resistance exercise programs on Youtube for beginners, and you can do it all at home if you invest in a pair of dumbbells or even one kettle bell. Summary: Regular exercise helps to kick- start weight loss and speed up the entire process. It also improves your strength, mobility and metabolic health. If mobility is a problem for you, lifting weights or bodyweight exercises are a fantastic alternative. Trial The Autoimmune Protocol Diet (Optional for Hashimoto’s)This step is only for those with Hashimoto’s or another autoimmune disease, and only recommended if you already consistently follow steps 1 to 5 but are still very overweight. The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) is an elimination diet that temporarily cuts out numerous food groups including dairy, grains, nuts and seeds, legumes, nightshade vegetables and more. It is said to have emerged from the Paleo movement (and sometimes referred to as Autoimmune Paleo), but to describe it as Paleo seems too basic. The AIP goes by the premise that certain food chemicals and compounds cause low- grade inflammation in the gut of individuals with an autoimmune disease (in this case Hashimoto’s disease). Low- grade inflammation appears to be a driving factor behind many modern health conditions, including autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorder and obesity too (1. By removing the everyday trigger foods in your diet, inflammation subsides giving your body the opportunity to recover and “reset”; known medically as remission. This is what occurs in celiac disease patients when they remove gluten from the diet, or most IBS patients following a low FODMAP diet. Is It Evidence- Based? I’ll admit I was highly sceptical of this theory at first; researchers in the area of rheumatology/immunology rarely do randomised trials on elimination diets (the only way to prove “cause and effect”). That means we still cannot reliably say what foods influence autoimmune diseases and their symptoms (nor to what extent). Does it help because you cut out specific trigger food components? Or because such restriction inadvertently forces you to eat healthier consistently? Or is it a combination of both? It’s hard to say, but we cannot ignore the abundance of non- trial and anecdotal evidence (personal testimonial) that indicate AIP helps with a variety of symptoms. Although only temporary, elimination diets like AIP are highly restrictive and can get complicated if you take medications for other medical conditions or are at risk of nutrient deficiencies. It’s fundamental you speak with your doctor before beginning. Bladder Stones in Cats: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments Bladder stones are rock- like deposits of minerals, crystals and organic material that are found in a cat’s bladder. They can remain small in size or grow to be several millimeters in diameter, and may rub against the bladder walls, causing inflammation. Bladder stones can also lead to blockage of the urethra and can interfere with a cat’s ability to urinate. There are several types of minerals that form stones under different conditions in a cat’s urinary tract. The two most common are struvite and calcium oxalate stones. How Can I Tell If My Cat Has Bladder Stones. Common signs that may indicate bladder stones are: Blood in the urine (hematuria)Painful urination. Straining to urinate. Some of these may include: Nutritionally imbalanced diet. Decreased water intake. Urinary tract infection. High concentration of magnesium, ammonium and phosphate minerals in the urine. Urine p. H favorable to the formation of various crystals. Certain drugs and dietary supplements. Congenital liver shunt. Breed predisposition. At What Age Do Cats Develop Bladder Stones? Cats can develop bladder stones at any age. Some types of stones are more likely to form at different lifestages. The risk of developing calcium oxalate stones, for example, increases as your cat ages. Which Cats Have a Greater Risk of Getting Bladder Stones? It is believed that neutered male Burmese, Persian and Himalayan cats may be genetically predisposed to developing calcium oxalate stones. How Are Bladder Stones in Cats Diagnosed? If the stones are big enough, your vet may be able to feel them through your cat’s abdominal wall. However, radiographs, ultrasound, urinalysis and urine culture are most often used to diagnose bladder stones and determine the underlying cause. How Can Bladder Stones Be Treated? Your veterinarian will want to figure out what kinds of stones have formed in your cat’s bladder in order to determine the proper treatment. Surgical removal, which is also a form of treatment, is sometimes necessary in order for a laboratory analysis to be performed. Your vet may decide on one or more of the following treatments: Vet- prescribed diet (to dissolve stones and modify p. H)Increased water consumption. Flushing procedure (filling bladder and inducing urination)Surgical removal of stones. Sometimes cats- more likely females, whose urinary tracts are not as narrow as the male’s- will naturally pass the smaller stones when urinating. Lithotripsy (breakdown of stones with shock waves)Continued. How Can I Prevent Bladder Stones from Forming Again? Once your cat has been diagnosed and treated for bladder stones, you’ll know what kind of stones he suffered from. Always have fresh water available for him and ask your vet if you should continue feeding your cat a special diet. Exercise is also important for keeping your cat’s system healthy. Your vet may recommend a urinalysis and urine culture several times throughout the year to test for crystals and/or infection. What Can Happen if Bladder Stones Go Untreated? Stones that go untreated may lodge in the urethra, causing a blockage- especially in males, who have narrower urethras- that may prevent your cat from urinating. Some signs of a urinary blockage are vomiting, nausea, appetite loss and a hard, distended abdomen. This is an emergency situation and will become fatal if not treated immediately. Can Bladder Stones Indicate Other Health Issues? Bladder stones can develop as a result of certain metabolic disorders. Diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism can lead to urinary tract infections, which can contribute to the formation of bladder stones. Web. MD Veterinary Reference from the ASPCASources.
